Seabold Montessori Preschool
Seabold Montessori is a small mixed-age preschool based on the educational philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori. The Head Teachers are trained Montessorians who serve as observers, role models and educational guides. They are the creators of the beautiful, rich and stimulating children’s house which allow the children to thrive (see below for staff bios). Freedom of choice within the safe, structured environment let children work at their own pace and pursue their interests safely and independently.
- The environment should be safe, comfortable, clean, orderly, rich, cheerful and peaceful.
- The materials should be inviting, self-correcting, and developmentally flexible.
- The caregiver should be nurturer, observer, role-model, and educational and social guide.
- Children need nurturing, understanding, consistency and choices.
- Children should have freedom of movement.
- Children should be treated with respect as individuals.
- It is necessary to follow the child.
"Play is the work of the child." -- Maria Montessori
We enjoy a 4:1 child to caregiver ratio that allows us to follow the child and create an environment that meets each individual's needs. The Montessori didactic materials are used alongside traditional educational toys and manipulatives in each area. This provides a range of options to meet the needs of the various developmental levels and learning styles of our multi-age group.
The curriculum areas are as follows:
Everyday Living develops social graces, care of self and environment, concentration and coordination.
Sensorial focuses on classification, discrimination, and fine tuning of the senses.
Science/Geography explores zoology, botany, astronomy, earth and physical sciences and geography.
Mathematics guides toward numeration, counting, decimal system work, addition, multiplication, subtraction, and understanding fractions.
Language involves whole language, phonics, reading, writing, grammar, and an introduction to Spanish.
Art allows for exploration of different art media and for project creation.
Music is incorporated throughout the day during group, to enhance lessons, and as a soothing background.
We run a 4 day small mixed-age program on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 8:30 AM to 12:30 PM. We are open for 36 weeks from September to June. We close for 1 week in November and 2 weeks in December.
