Seabold Montessori is a small mixed-age preschool based on the educational philosophies of Dr. Maria Montessori. The Head Teachers are trained Montessorians who serve as observers, role models and educational guides. They are the creators of the beautiful, rich and stimulating children’s house which allow the children to thrive (see below for staff bios). Freedom of choice within the safe, structured environment let children work at their own pace and pursue their interests safely and independently.

We believe:

  • The environment should be safe, comfortable, clean, orderly, rich, cheerful and peaceful.
  • The materials should be inviting, self-correcting, and developmentally flexible.
  • The caregiver should be nurturer, observer, role-model, and educational and social guide.
  • Children need nurturing, understanding, consistency and choices.
  • Children should have freedom of movement.
  • Children should be treated with respect as individuals.
  • It is necessary to follow the child.
We can only give to each individual the chance to fulfill [their] potential possibilities.
— Maria Montessori, 1967

We enjoy a 5:1 child to caregiver ratio that allows us to follow the child and create an environment that meets each individual's needs. The Montessori didactic materials are used alongside traditional educational toys and manipulatives in each area. This provides a range of options to meet the needs of the various developmental levels and learning styles of our multi-age group.

The curriculum areas are as follows:

Play is the work of the child.
— Maria Montesorri

Seabold Montessori Staff

Barbi-Jo Smith, Directress - Barbi-Jo began her teaching career the summer after earning BA Degree from St. Anselm College in NH. She was filling in as an Assistant at Bedford's Montissori's summer program and was struck by the whole child engagement and joy she experienced in the classroom. She jumped right back into school and earned her Pre-Primary Montessori certification from Northeast Montessori Institute, ME. This led to a year-long internship and 4 more years teaching at The Children’s House of Nantucket, MA. A spontaneous move to Seattle landed her a Lead Teaching position at The Kinder Palace. 3 years later she forged out on her own and opened Sunshine Montessori in Lynwood which she ran for 9 years. After a 13 year hiatus to raise and homeschool her 3 children on Bainbridge Island, Barbi-Jo hopes to continue sharing her passion of positive preschool education through the opening of Seabold Montessori in 2016.

Renee Bowcutt, Teacher - Renee received her Pre-primary training through the Montessori Teacher College Northwest and her Assistant Training through Montessori Education Institute of the Pacific Northwest. She startedd as Barbi-Jo's Assistant at the Kinder Palace and was instrumental in the founding of Sunshine Montessori, assisting in its initial 2 years. Renee then moved to Battle Ground and opened My Time Montessori, which she ran until the arrival of her son. When he turned 3, she taught at Echo Preschool, where she was able to incorporate Montessori into their traditional program. 5 years later, she switched gears and became a Para Educator for the Evergreen School District in Vancouver, WA.

Now 20 years later, the teachers come together again to lead the cheerful, consistent, experienced and qualified staff of Seabold Montessori Preschool!

Jondra Stimson, Assistant Teacher - Jondra is also trained as a Montessori Assistant Teacher through MEIPN. She has 10 years of experience with the Girl Scouts as a Troop Co-leader and as the Bainbridge Island GS Day Camp Director. Before joining us as Seabold, she worked part-time as a Childcare Provider for the MOPS and Mothers Morning Retreat groups.
